How to play Dixit

Give picture clues that some players recognize.

Play Dixit online with friends at a shared table. One player gives a clue inspired by an illustrated card, and everyone else tries to blend in or identify it. Good clues leave room for interpretation without becoming arbitrary.

01 / The essentials

Dixit rules

  • The storyteller selects a card and gives a word, phrase, or other short clue inspired by it.
  • Other players submit a card that could fit the clue. Submitted cards are shuffled, and non-storytellers vote for the original. You cannot vote for your own card.
  • When some but not all voters find the storyteller, the storyteller and correct voters score three points. If all or none find it, the other players score two. Votes for another player’s submitted card earn that player an extra point each.

Choose an interpretation

Use a mood, relationship, or unexpected detail rather than simply naming the largest object. A useful clue can point to your card while allowing another plausible image.

Match the audience

Consider what the whole table has experienced together. An obscure personal reference may produce no correct votes, while a literal description may produce all of them.

Submit a plausible decoy

As a non-storyteller, look for the card that fits the clue’s meaning from another angle. Matching its emotion can be more convincing than matching one object.

03 / Worked example

From description to suggestion

For an image of a small figure beneath an enormous clock, “clock” may be too direct. “Always late” could suggest that image while also fitting cards about journeys or missed opportunities. Whether it works depends on the submitted cards and the table’s interpretation.

Learn with your table

  1. Open a casual table and agree to discuss clues after each reveal.
  2. Rotate storyteller turns and notice which clues produce some correct votes.
  3. Compare the strongest decoy with the original card to understand what the clue communicated.

A common mistake

Trying to make everyone guess correctly misses the storyteller’s scoring goal. Aim for a clue that reaches part of the table, and adapt after seeing the votes.
