How to play Catan

01 / The essentials

Catan rules

• Place initial settlements and roads in snake order. The second settlement supplies starting resources from its neighboring producing hexes.
• Roll two dice on your turn. Matching hexes produce for adjacent settlements and cities; a seven triggers the robber and discards for large hands.
• Trade with players or the bank and spend resources on construction or development cards. Settlements score one point, cities two, and Longest Road and Largest Army two each. Reach the table’s target to win.

02 / Build the habit

Balance production and access

Favor productive numbers, but inspect which resources the settlement actually supplies. An attractive total can still leave you dependent on trades for every expansion.

Build toward a destination

Before spending on a road, choose the settlement location, port, or route it serves. Roads alone usually do not advance your score unless they secure access or support Longest Road.

Trade around your next build

Decide what you can complete this turn, then trade for the missing resource. Consider what the trade lets the other player build as well, especially near the target score.

04 / Put it into practice

Learn with your table

1. At setup, state how your two settlements can fund the next settlement or city.
2. After each roll, identify one achievable build before proposing trades.
3. At the end, review one road that helped your plan and one purchase that delayed it.

A common mistake

Do not measure a trade only by how many cards you receive. One useful resource may complete a build, while several surplus cards may only increase your discard exposure.

Are ports useful without the matching resources?

A specialized port helps when you can produce enough of its resource to use its improved bank rate. Evaluate a port together with your production rather than treating every port as equally valuable.
